For almost a decade Business Health Resources has been helping clients meet the challenge of one of the most pervasive and complicated issues in safety and health. Whether it's slips, trips, and falls or cumulative trauma, our distinct services have been refined over the years into a proven model for reducing and preventing musculoskeletal injuries. We use a process oriented approach that is specific to the needs of our clients.
Our approach incorporates a combination of ergonomic, biomechanical and behavior change methodologies.
This approach is applicable to any type of work force, whether in office based environments or in traditional industrial or construction environments. In general, our process consists of four phases: (1) assessment, (2) development, (3) implementation, and (4) reinforcement. Below is a brief overview of the major components of our approach.
Risk Analysis: In order to understand the specific challenges our clients face we assess the work environment from a traditional ergonomics perspective, and more importantly, from a body mechanics perspective. We believe engaging the employees and having them participate in all aspects the process is critical. We have found that when employees are given the opportunity to contribute they are more open to change and more likely to take the steps necessary to reduce their at risk behaviors.
In the Risk Analysis we typically:
- Analyze specific job tasks, tools, equipment and working environment
- Observe and videotape specific job tasks
- Review injury history, investigation findings, and case management
- Conduct employee surveys (e.g., problems, symptoms, solutions)
- Identify engineering controls to mitigate hazards
Ergo-Power® Workshops: Our workshops are multi media, highly interactive, and designed for 15 to 25 students at a time. The workshop is customized based on the information collected during the risk analysis and is personalized with one-on-one interaction with each student. Our workshop focuses on changing employee belief systems in order change their behavior. Studies show that traditional approaches to training can be effective at increasing an employee’s knowledge but have little to no impact on changing their behavior.
We use a principles based approach. These principles provide each student a system which they can then apply to their specific circumstances. By applying these principles each student develops solutions that work for them to reduce their aches, pains and risk of injury. We call this process self-based problem solving.
Customized Ergo-Power® Training Video: We typically create a customized training video for each client. This video is based on findings from the risk analysis and serves as the backbone of the workshop, leading the program from one module to the next. It acts as a jumping off point for discussions and self discovery based learning. It also shows what cannot otherwise be seen in the classroom. The customized video demonstrates real life practical solutions that will work for them. By involving the employees in the process everything they see in the video applies to them and their jobs.
Reinforcement: To effectively change
behavior and achieve sustained results there must be frequent reinforcement. We
believe a process oriented approach is the most efficient and effective. In
selecting reinforcement programs we assist our clients based on their
specific needs, their level of commitment, and the maturity level
of their safety and health management system. These
programs focus on both hazard elimination and behavior change. We’ve
helped our clients implement a wide variety of tools that measure,
monitor, reinforce, and improve the program's effectiveness.
Consulting Services: In addition we provide a variety of focused services including:
- Risk analysis/job hazard analysis
- Pre-employment physical abilities testing programs
- Individual workstation consultations
- Workstation design for specialized job tasks
- Developing corporate buying specifications
- Developing corporate ergonomics programs
